Another one to add to the wishlist.

I like this one:

It’s a Seiko 5 sports SNZ387J (Japan made model).  I love the clean looks, large markers and rotating bezel.  This one has does not have an integrated bracelet, so it can be swapped with something even more sporty.  Less than $100 on eBay.  It also comes in blue as well.

This is the SNZ389J.  About the same price ($2.00 more on average).

Both are clean, nice looking watches.

Low cost alternative

Came across some Casio chronographs looking online and discovered the “Edifice” series.

This is an EF-503L-1A EF503L Casio Edifice Chronograph Watch, as seen on eBay. Going for about $80, and, of course, shipping from Singapore, but I may look in local stores to see what is around. There are white dial versions as well, but the white hands on black may be easier to read. Much better than $300 for the Zepplin with almost identical looks.

It also comes in a metal bracelet version, which is less expensive, for some reason:

EF-503D-1A EF503D 1A is less than $70. The watch looks pretty sharp on leather or metal and will save me about $3320, compared to an Omega.

I honestly have no problem wearing a Casio, I wore one for years in high school and had no problem with it, other than the plastic lug cracking off.

Nice, but pricey

Chronographs are still haunting me. I love the look, but I don’t like how cluttered the dial gets. I like my Fossil chrono a lot, but my favorite is the very rich man watch, the Omega Speedmaster moon watch. Too bad it costs over $3000. I was looking at longislandwatch.com and saw this little beauty:

vs.

It’s still $299, but costs less than 1/10th the price of the Omega. It looks cool on leather, but I am sure a nice bracelet would be compliment it as well. The sub-dials are in a little different order, but I like the overall look. A quartz watch, but that’s ok. I expect it for all inexpensive chronographs. Oh well, just something to think about. For that kind of money, I could almost get my grail watch, the Seiko Alpinist.

Simple watch

In case I don’t get this as a gift, I like the SNK789 Seiko 5. I have it on my master list, but I found on eBay, if you get it with a metal bracelet instead of leather, it is less than $70 shipped!

snk789k1_1.jpg

I still think it would make a great replacement for my white Timex. It looks like I can even steal the new leather band I have on the Timex! It does have a few advantages over my old Expedition, it is an automatic, has hardlex instead of acrylic crystal and it is made of stainless steel instead of ‘base metal.’ The styling is similar. Strait hands, white face, and red second hand.

Though it has served me well, the exposed base metal does make me itch when I wear it. Must be brass or something with high nickel content.

The Grand List

My birthday is coming up, so I am trying to narrow down what I want to ask for. They are all automatics, I have decided against battery operated chronographs. Here are the top 13 watches I would like next, in no particular order:

Seiko SKX033K2

skx033k.jpg

It’s a Seiko SKX033, a 100 meter watch, not a true diver. It looks
very similar to a Rolex Submariner, but with Seiko style hands. Very
similar to the SKX031, except with the ‘Pepsi’ blue and red bezel. I
think I like it more than the all black ‘031. The splash of red adds a
lot. Again, Rolex looks at a decent price. About $120 on eBay. Its $159 on Chronograph.com.

Seiko 5 SNZB19K

snzb19k.jpg

Another 5. I really like this one. Pearl face with a cool lime
green second hand. Only about $120 on eBay. I could use a white/light
faced watch. My only other light faced is my Timex. It’s $165 on Chronograph.com.

Seiko 5 SNZE49 J1

snze49k1.jpg

I like the red face of this one. It is a Seiko 5, so it is an
automatic. The bracelet looks pretty sharp as well. About $130 to 150
on eBay. It’s$153 on Chronograph.com

Seiko 5 Superior SKZ207J

skz207k.jpg

A Seiko 5 Superior, SKZ207J compass watch. I like the look, cream
face, and compass feature. It also comes in blue and black. Not sure how the compass works yet, bit I
love the looks of this watch. 200m water resistant. This looks like a Japanese made unit,
since it has the 7S36 movement. About $125 on eBay.  A whopping $235 on Chronograph.com! Ouch.

Seiko SKX031K2

skx031k2.jpg

It’s a Seiko SKX031, a 100 meter watch, not a true diver. It looks
very similar to a Rolex Submariner, but with Seiko style hands. It also
costs about $5500 less. A Rolex homage with the hand style I like from Seiko. It’s $158 on Chronograph.com.

SNK339K

snk339k.jpg

Sporty, baby blue face. Is is too baby blue? Not sure. $115 on Chronograph.com.

SNK391K1

snk391k1.jpg

Cool retro brown faced watch. I don’t know why I like it, but I do. I like the bracelet as well. Only $95 on Chronograph.com.

SNK789K-L

snk789k-l.jpg

If I ever want to retire my Timex, this would be the one to replace it. Simple, white faced watch. $135 on Chronograph.com.

SNKE03J1

snke03j1.jpg

An all black watch. Would be a very different addition to my collection. $168 on Chronograph.com is a bit more than I wanted to spend.

SNKF49K1

snkf49k1.jpg

Simple, clean lines. Looks like a Grand Seiko. I think it would wear well with formal or casual clothes as well. $128 on Chronograph.com.

SNKF51K1

snkf51k1.jpg

This one has some nice features. Black bezel and carbon fiber face. The red second hand is cool looking as well. Would also look excellent on black leather strap. $138 on Chronograph.com.

SNZB21K

snzb21k.jpg

Nice, manly looking watch with a green second hand. The hands are a style I like as well and I like the 1/5 second hash marks. The bracelet it very nice looking as well and the watch would look great on leather as well. $128 on Chronograph.com.

SNZE74K1

snze74k1.jpg

A rose gold and black faced watch. I think it is quite stunning looking and I like the full day of the week is spelled out. $168 on Chronograph.com.

Ah, the mechanical watch

Disjointed, drug influenced post below:

Tiff bought me a lovely mechanical Seiko watch a few weeks ago as an early Christmas present. Living with it for a month has really given me respect for mechanical watches. I used to wear a hand wound watch for several years, somewhere around 1989 to 1993. I remember I bought it at Target. It don’t remember the brand, but it worked well until it was lost during a snow shoveling experience outside my second apartment. I found it the next spring, but by then, it was rusted and ruined. I am sure if it was a Seiko it 1) wouldn’t of come of my wrist (strap failed) 2) if it did, the Stainless Steel body would not of rusted.

I remember when I was a kid, bugging Mom and Dad to get a watch. I wanted a analog watch. At the time, it was probably 1986 or 87. Everything was digital. I eventually found an all black, I believe it was a Casio Quartz, plastic watch. It was my first analog quartz. I wore that watch for years until one of the plastic lugs cracked. To this day, I can’t buy a plastic watch, no matter how cool it looks. I think Mom and Dad probably paid $30 or $40 or more for that watch, which was no small sum 20 years ago.

Back to my current watch. I really do enjoy wearing an automatic watch. It is much more ‘alive’ than my other watches. I still watch the second hand sweep across the dial. I like the fact it will probably outlive me, and I can pass it down to Glenn some day. The watch is starting to settle down, it is about +10 seconds a day fast. It was about 15 seconds a day fast in the beginning. I kind of like the fact I have to reset the time every now and then.  Now I realize, you really don’t need super exact time. +/- 1 minute isn’t going to kill you.

Ahh, drugs, sweet drugs.
